Watch the Lyric Video for La Santa Cecilia’s New Song ‘I Won’t Cry For You’
La Santa Cecilia is teasing the band’s fall album with the first, swinging, single, “I Won’t Cry For You.”
The Grammy-winning group, fronted by the muscular voice of singer La Marisoul, is a big-sounding band best known for cumbia and regional Mexican-infused pop that effervesces from the roots of the Latino musicians’ roots, with material that includes boleros and rancheras as well as a cover of “Tainted Love” and a groovy, Norteño-tinged version of “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
The band, that started playing for tourists at the Mexican market on Los Angeles’ Olivera Street, has also gained fame as a voice for immigrants, most pointedly with the 2013 song “ICE” (as in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and through appearances at immigration reform rallies, universities and for community groups.
The new English-language single, out Friday (Aug. 28) takes a lighter turn around the dance floor. Typically, Marisoul lustily embraces the retro swing sound of “I Won’t Cry For You,” making what could be a throwaway track into one destined to attract more fans beyond its dedicated Latino audience. The lyric video appropriates ts graphic style from the work of artist Barbara Kruger. Watch it below.
La Santa Cecilia starts a coast-to-tour in September, with stops including New York, San Antonio, and Chicago’s World Music Festival.
